EURODEMOS – A new push to European Democracy
Funded by the Erasmus+ programme, the project is based on the intervention strategies established within the European Democracy Action Plan, which aims to empower citizens and build more resilient democracies across the EU by promoting free and fair elections, strengthening media freedom, and countering disinformation. As underlined by the words of the President of the European Commission, Ursula Von Der Leyen: “The EU is not just about parties and politics, rules or regulations, markets or currencies. It is about people and their aspirations.”
OBJECTIVES
- To inform and raise awareness about the foundations of European democracy and the challenges posed by the pandemic, digitalization, and disinformation;
- To directly involve young Europeans in decision-making processes and relevant political debates;
- To improve dialogue among young Europeans from different countries on topics related to European democracy.
Activities
- Organization of 7 informative panels on 7 identified topics related to EU democracy: electoral observation; new technologies (e-government); fake news and disinformation; debate on the European demos; EU institutions and proposals for their reform; how to address cultural diversity in the EU; the role of civil society in the EU;
- Drafting of recommendations addressing the topics covered in the panels. For each topic, participants will be invited to identify at least 10 recommendations to be addressed to EU institutions and other European citizens.
- Debate sessions within transnational events, specifically designed to give young people the opportunity to discuss issues related to European democracy and to express their specific needs and perspectives.
Expected Results
- Improved knowledge of key issues related to democracy, providing the theoretical foundations necessary to analyze and understand current trends;
- Enhanced communication, negotiation, and debating skills;
- Increased participation in democratic processes;
- Better understanding of fake news and techniques for recognizing it;
- Improved knowledge of EU and OSCE/ODIHR international standards for electoral observation;
- Greater intercultural awareness and improved personal skills;
- Increased awareness of gender issues and gender perspectives
